Automation & Programmability

Automation applies identical, templated configurations across many devices, eliminating the variation that creeps in with manual per-device CLI.

By replacing repetitive manual typing with validated, reusable code, automation removes typos and missed steps that occur in box-by-box CLI work.

Automation pushes changes to many devices in parallel almost instantly (speed) and lets one engineer manage thousands of devices (scalability).

Managing and provisioning infrastructure through machine-readable definition files (code) rather than manual processes, so configs are versioned, repeatable, and automatable.

Configuration drift is when a device's actual running config gradually diverges from the intended/baseline config, usually due to manual ad-hoc changes.

Idempotency means applying the same operation repeatedly yields the same end state; re-running a playbook does not change a device already in the desired state.
