Security Assessment & Testing

A test exercises a specific control or system to see how it behaves. An assessment is a broad evaluation of security posture combining tests, reviews, and analysis. An audit is a formal, structured evaluation against a defined standard, usually for compliance or assurance and often by an independent party.

An internal assessment is performed by personnel within the organization's own control (its own staff or internal audit function). It is convenient and cost-effective but may lack objectivity and independence.

An external assessment is conducted by parties outside the organization's direct control — for example a contracted security firm. It provides greater objectivity than an internal assessment while the organization may still retain some control over scope.

A third-party assessment is performed by an entity outside the enterprise's control entirely — such as an independent auditor or certification body — providing the highest level of independence and assurance to outside stakeholders (regulators, customers, partners).

Each location has different control ownership and access. On-premises systems are fully testable by the organization; cloud systems fall under shared responsibility and provider rules-of-engagement; hybrid environments require coordinating both, including provider authorization for testing.
