1

In a graph where y FALLS as x RISES, what is the relationship between the two variables called?

An inverse (or negative) relationship — as one variable increases, the other decreases. The opposite is a direct (positive) relationship.

2

In a graph where y RISES as x RISES, what is the relationship called?

A direct (or positive) relationship — both variables increase together. The line or curve slopes upward to the right.

3

What is the FIRST thing you should read on any ACT Science graph BEFORE reading data points?

The axis labels and their units (and the title/legend). Knowing what each axis measures and in what units prevents misreading values and reversing the relationship.

4

On a standard graph, which axis is the INDEPENDENT variable usually plotted on, and which holds the DEPENDENT variable?

The independent variable goes on the x-axis (horizontal); the dependent variable goes on the y-axis (vertical). The dependent variable's value depends on the independent one.

5

What does it mean to INTERPOLATE a value from a data set?

To estimate a value that falls BETWEEN two measured data points — reading inside the range of the data you already have.
