NEC General Requirements

The National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) sets practical safeguarding requirements for electrical installations to protect people and property from electrical hazards.

Chapters 1–4 are general and apply broadly; Chapters 5–7 cover special occupancies, equipment, and conditions and can modify the earlier chapters.

"Shall" indicates a mandatory requirement, while "shall be permitted" indicates an allowed (optional) action.

The maximum current, in amperes, a conductor can carry continuously under its conditions of use without exceeding its temperature rating.

The circuit conductors between the final overcurrent device protecting the circuit and the outlet(s).

All circuit conductors between the service equipment (or other power source) and the final branch-circuit overcurrent device.
