Behavior Assessment

Records provide history on prior diagnoses, treatments, medications, and what has already been tried, helping target the assessment efficiently and avoid redundant or contraindicated procedures.

Conditions such as pain, illness, allergies, sleep deprivation, seizures, gastrointestinal issues, and medication side effects can evoke or worsen behavior and may require medical referral.

Cultural norms shape what families view as acceptable behavior, valued goals, communication styles, and intervention acceptability, so assessment and treatment must be culturally responsive.

Indirect assessment gathers information without observing behavior directly (e.g., interviews, rating scales), while descriptive assessment involves direct observation of behavior in its natural context.

A structured or open-ended conversation with caregivers, teachers, or the client to gather information about antecedents, consequences, and contexts surrounding the target behavior.
