Measurement, Data Display & Interpretation

A clear, objective, and concise statement of the target behavior in observable and measurable terms so that independent observers can agree on its occurrence.

A definition that describes a behavior by its physical form or movement (what it looks like), independent of its effect on the environment.

A definition that describes a behavior by its effect on the environment (its function or outcome) rather than its physical form.

It can capture many physically different responses that produce the same environmental effect, making the definition more efficient and complete.

When the function is unknown or hard to observe, or when the physical form itself is the concern (e.g., a specific motor movement), a topography-based definition is preferred.

The process of applying quantitative labels to describe and differentiate dimensions of behavior and environmental events.
