To find problems that could cause a crash or breakdown before the vehicle is driven. Federal and state laws require commercial drivers to inspect their vehicles.

Seven steps. Following them in the same order each time builds a reliable habit so nothing is missed.

Vehicle overview — review the last vehicle inspection report (DVIR), approach the vehicle, note its general condition, look for damage or fresh leaks under it.

The previous driver's vehicle inspection report (DVIR). You must review it and, if defects were noted, confirm the required repairs were made and certified.

Check the engine compartment — engine off, with the hood or cab tilted. Inspect fluids, belts, hoses, leaks, and steering/charging components.
