General Science

All living things are made of cells, the cell is the basic unit of life, and all cells come from pre-existing cells.

Prokaryotic cells (bacteria) lack a membrane-bound nucleus and organelles; eukaryotic cells (plants, animals, fungi) have a true nucleus and membrane-bound organelles.

The nucleus controls cell activities and contains the cell's DNA (genetic material).

Mitochondria carry out cellular respiration, producing most of the cell's ATP (energy).

Ribosomes are the sites of protein synthesis, assembling amino acids into proteins.

Chloroplasts, found in plant cells, contain chlorophyll and carry out photosynthesis.
