Between the flywheel face and the pressure plate, which squeezes the disc against the spinning flywheel to transmit torque.

Friction facings (often a ceramic, organic, or composite material) riveted to a steel plate, similar to brake lining material.

They absorb engine torsional vibration and cushion shock during engagement, reducing driveline harshness and chatter.

It slides on the splines of the transmission input shaft, allowing the disc to move fore and aft while transmitting rotation.
